What is currently weighing on your mind? Maybe you’re trying to get bikini-body-ready now that it’s finally stopped snowing. Maybe you’re on the verge of a huge life-altering occasion such as having a baby or getting married. Maybe you’re just trying to make it out of bed in the morning.
For me, it’s packing. Or, more specifically, packing lightly.
You see, I officially start my journey in six days, the journey I thought up and have been following through on over a year ago.
For those of you who haven’t followed along, or who have forgotten, I’ll give you a rough timeline of events for the year:
Mid April (AKA this weekend): pack up my life in Virginia and move back to Chicago, unpack
Mid May: pack up part of my life to live in Alaska for the summer
Mid May: Quick trip to San Francisco before Alaska
Mid May – Mid September: work in and explore Alaska
Mid September: pack up life in Alaska and move back to Chicago, unpack
Mid September: quick turnaround – pack up backpacking pack for a week long backpacking/camping trip with my dad somewhere on the Appalachian trail
End of September: arrive home from camping trip, unpack, and re-pack for a 6 month – 1 year trip in Europe (and maybe Asia)
Beginning of October: leave for Europe
Do you see why PACKING is what is weighing on my mind? I kid you not, I have already had nightmares about packing. The most vivid being that I arrived in London at night only to realize that my suitcase was empty and I hadn’t thought ahead enough to write down any contact information of the person I was supposed to stay with.
So, like any type A, list-making, slightly neurotic woman, I’ve been spending a lot of time researching the art of packing. And yes, it can definitely be categorized as an art, an art that I have always thought I excel at, but am starting to question.
The most helpful resource I have found thus far is Her Packing List (HPL), an entire website dedicated to packing light, especially for women! Because God knows we have more issues with packing light than men. Simply talking about packing shoes and how I should really only pack 3 pairs at the maximum, is enough to send me into an anxious tizzy. What do you mean THREE PAIRS? And no room for heels and boots? If you know me, you are aware of my extensive shoe collection and how hard it would be to make this huge life decision.
But articles like this one help me step away from the edge of panic with a voice of reason.
And then there are resources like this that make me cry a few tears of joy. Could they make it any easier?
So, I want to ask you: what packing light tips do you have for me? A list of must-have products, something I’ll need but never would have thought of, physical packing tips such as rolling vs. folding, packing cubes, etc? It’s all very welcome and much appreciated.
